What Are Pole Barns Used For?
Pole Barns are large storage structures where the weight of the building is supported by posts or poles anchored in the ground instead of resting on a foundation. They have no basement and high ceilings, with the ability to have large egresses between the posts. Here are some common uses for pole barns.
Garage
Pole barns’ capability to have large egresses makes them ideal for garages. Have some extra land and want to keep your car or truck out of the elements? You can easily install a pole barn with a single or double-wide garage door. You can insulate it to make a garage/workshop combo or save some money by leaving the pole barn uninsulated. Either way, you’ll keep your car out of the rain and snow.
Horse Barn
Another popular use of pole barns is for livestock. Turn this sturdy steel structure into a horse barn or cow barn by installing stalls and feeding troughs. You could keep the barn enclosed with barn doors or make it an open walk-in barn in your pasture. Pole barns can even be constructed large enough to accommodate a small arena to practice riding indoors or simply exercise your horses in the wintertime.
Hobby Workshop
Pole barns are easily insulated, making them ideal for a workshop. A handyman will have plenty of room in a pole barn to store his tools and workbench. If you have a hobby that is taking up too much space in your house or garage, take it out to the workshop! As mentioned above, you could build a garage/workshop combination if your hobby involves vehicles.
RV or Boat Storage
If you own vehicles too large for traditional garages, such as a boat or RV, pole barns are ideal for storage. Pole barns can be built extremely tall with large doors to fit any sized vehicle. They offer more protection for boats and RVs than a simple carport or boat/RV cover.
Storing Farm Equipment
Pole barns are ideal for farmers. Because of their flexible size, farmers can build a pole barn to fit their heavy equipment, such as tractors, seeder, baler, and combine harvester. Depending on the crop, farmers may use their equipment just once or a handful of times each year. In the off season, equipment must be kept safe from the elements and pole barns are the best solution.
Commercial Storage
Lastly, there are commercial applications of pole barns. Businesses of all types who need storage at their base of operations use pole barns. A medium- to large-scale plumbing or landscaping business can store their fleet of vehicles in an extra-long garage. An online storefront can use a pole barn as a warehouse and packaging facility. The possibilities are nearly endless when it comes to pole barns.
